About your trip

Explore the beautiful nature and culture of upper Suriname by kayak! Upper Suriname is known for all the Maroon villages next to the Suriname river. In this trip we will kayak from Sintiadam to Kumalu with a culture stop in Kosindo, a village in between Sintiadam en Kumalu.

It's an impressive route! We will pass many rapids along the way and of course we have the chance spot some beautiful wildlife such as caiman, anaconda's, giant otters, tapirs, macaws... And maybe if we're lucky we will see a jaguar and/or harpy eagle!

Please note

Due to high water levels, this expedition is most likely not feasible during the months of May-July and December-January.

Make sure to check with us for availability during these periods.

Journey to the heart of Upper Suriname

Early in the morning we will leave Paramaribo by car to Atjoni! Atjoni is a village at the end of the road. To go further into upper Suriname you need to take a boat. So from here we will take a boat to Kumalu. We will have several beautiful hours on the boat where we will pass a lot of Maroon villages, jungle and even some rapids until we reach Kumalu. Kumalu is also knows as 'the dream island'.

As transportation will take us all day we will have a relaxed night. We will sleep in Kumalu.

Accomodation: lodge with beds

Day 2

Into the untouched rainforest

As we spend the night in one of the last Maroon village, Kumalu, we continue our journey up the Gran Rio. Once you have passed the very last villages you enter a real untouched rainforest. Here you can spot all kinds of things along the river, caimans, monkeys and with luck maybe even a giant anaconda or a jaguar! The journey there not only takes you past beautiful villages and untouched rainforest, but it is also a real adventure itself. You have to cross several rapids where you have to get out and tow the boat! Of course, a number of experienced and fit Saramacan boatmen will come along to help you!

The journey goes all the way to Sintiadam, a large rapid that spreads over the entire river. You spend the night here in hammocks on an island with a beautiful view of the river.

Kayaking at Sunrise

We will wake up before the sun rises so we can start our kayak adventure with the beautiful sunrise!

From now we will paddle back to Kamalu, the village where we started our journey.

We will paddle the whole day. Along the way we will of course try to spot as many wildlife as we can!

We will also cross some challenging rapids which we have to navigate trough.

Accommodation: we'll make our own camp alongside the river where we will hang our hammocks + tarps.
