Maratakka kayak tour

Paddle through pristine wilderness!
Maratakka kayak tour image

Introduction

The Maratakka River is located in the district of Nickerie. This beautiful river is still undiscovered by most tourists. Here, we have the chance to see manatees, giant otters, and with the abundance of Mauritius palms, we have an excellent opportunity to spot the blue and yellow-winged macaw! This tour is a back-to-basics adventure, meaning we will camp in the jungle, sleep in hammocks, and cook over a campfire. This way, we can truly connect with nature!

This tour will be guided by an Unlock Nature wildlife guide.

Even after just ten minutes, you'll feel like you’re alone on the river—no people, just nature! The scenery is breathtaking, and we may spot various birds, as well as giant otters and manatees!

After the boat ride, the captain will drop us off and return to Wageningen. We will set up our first camp along the river. Dinner will be delightful, possibly featuring fish you caught yourself! We will also prepare our kayaks and gear for the upcoming days.

After the first night in our self-made camp, it is time to start our kayak adventure! How exciting! We will be kayaking back to the village of Wageningen.

We will wake up early in the morning and begin kayaking as the sun rises. Not only will it be cooler than during the day, but we will also enjoy stunning views and have better chances of spotting wildlife such as toucans and giant otters!

We will take a break around lunchtime, stopping alongside the river to prepare our meal. This is a perfect time to rest from kayaking while it’s hottest. You can enjoy a well-deserved swim or try your hand at fishing. After our break, we’ll continue kayaking until dusk. Then, it’s time to set up a new camp!

Once camp is set up, we’ll prepare a delicious dinner and unwind for a bit. If you’re up for it, we can embark on a lovely evening hike to see if any wildlife is awake that typically sleeps during the day. The next day, we will repeat this beautiful adventure!
