Maratakka

Explore this beautiful remote area
Maratakka image

Introduction

The Maratakka River, hidden in the heart of Nickerie, is one of Suriname’s best-kept secrets, still undiscovered by most tourists. This peaceful jungle river offers a unique chance to spot rare wildlife, including manatees, giant otters, Toco toucans, and the striking blue-and-yellow macaws that thrive among the many Mauritius palms.

Guided by a local expert, you’ll explore the area by boat, gliding through untouched rainforest and quiet creeks.

At night, choose between a comfortable bed in the village of Wageningen or a hammock camp near the river, where you can fully connect with nature.

For those who want to extend the experience, a visit to the nearby Bigi Pan wetland can be added. Whether you’re a wildlife lover or just looking to unwind in pure nature, this off-the-grid trip promises a raw and unforgettable escape.

This tour will be guided by an Unlock Nature wildlife guide.
